Anyone have any personal experiance with 1:8 twist barrels?

I've heard some guys have issues with 18" or 20", 1:8 twist barrels shooting 55gr FMJ's.

-specifically poor accuracy with 55gr FMJ ammunition, while 62gr, 69gr, 75gr, 77gr shoot way better than 55gr-

anyone have that issue personally or know of anyone with this issue?

thanks

It's completely legal.   The only problem is that it puts you into FR Class (Full Retard), and you might be the only one in the entire country running FR.   Of course, it would set you up for 1st Place in your class, everytime you shoot.

I have a BCM 18" SS410™ barrel  in 1:8 and it shoots 55's great.
Ignore 80% of what you read on the internet regarding twist and what you can and can't shoot.. ;)

The 55's in my 1/8 18" barrel don't group great, I can only hold around 1.5" at 100yd

But those are generic FMJBT 55gr bullets... at around 3000fps... For 3 gun... I have no problem with that.

The 62gr bullet's, that are pulled that I load.. with the same powder load as the 55gr, I have not chrono'd, but shoot just fine, and will hold under 1" at 100yd.

I would guess a heavier bullet would do even better in my gun.

I run 2 loads... 100yd and under load with 55gr... and my 62 for the longer range stuff, where accuracy counts more.

I'm sure this will evolve over the course of this season.

I have two rifles with 1-8 twist neither shoot 55 fmj or 55 soft points that well around 2 inches.  But they both shoot 55 vmax and 75 bthp around an inch.  I think it has more to do with the quality of bullet and barrel than the twist.  The open base on fmjs doesn't help accuracy.

I use a 1-8 and do fine don't know if you noticed or not 3 gun targets are pretty big
I finally figured out my pulled 55gr bullets were actually a mix of 55&62 gr heavier bullets hit higher out of my gun but still was getting my hits ;)

With the load J Mack cooked up (24.8 WC844, 55gr Hornady bulk FMJ) I shoot under 1" with a 4x scope.  I can hit the 550 and 720 gongs in usually a couple shots at Parma.

My 1:8 bbl shoots just fine with 55 gr.  whether I hit anything has more to do with the operator than anything else.

My 1/8 shoots 1.2 MOA with my batch of pulled 55 grainers under 25.5 H335. Same charge with hornady's is an inch and under.
